The Instruments

The hardware behind the clank.

LP Model 452 (Black Beauty)

The industry standard. Used on thousands of sessions including Blue Öyster Cult's 1976 recording. Heavy gauge steel, -3dB natural low cut, 3.1kHz primary resonance.

LPSteelClassic Rock

Pearl Primero

Preferred for its warmer tone. Copper alloy construction pushes the primary resonance down to 2.7kHz, giving it a slightly more vocal-friendly profile. Common in funk and R&B sessions.

PearlCopperFunk

Toca Tambourine/Bell Hybrid

Used in Latin rock applications. The unique shape creates a harmonic-rich overtone series extending to 6kHz. Santana's “Evil Ways” profile.

Custom/Homemade

The Mountain Sessions. Corky Laing has stated in interviews that the cowbell used on “Mississippi Queen” was sourced from a farm supply store. Unbranded, unknown alloy. The rarest profile.
